The 7800 is not the 7700

by Jason Preston on June 15, 2006

Looking through reviews on the projectors has been a bit of an experience. What I would really like to do, obviously, is have a look at the picture before I drop a significant pile of cash on one. However, it doesn’t look like that’s going to be a possibility.

I’ve been looking at getting the reasonably price BenQ PE7800, and I’ve seen a number of reviews for the 7700 (but I haven’t been able to find a way to *buy* said 7700 until today). Anyways, the 7700 is about an extra thousand dollars, so apparently it’s a better model.

Only now have I found a review for the actual product. I’ve never seen something so difficult to track down reviews on. Still they get good ratings.

I’m severely tempted.

Make sure you know what sort of lamp life you can expect and how much replacement lamps are going to be. They’re usually several hundred dollars.

Yeah, I looked at those. The lamps cost around $400 and the life on the 7800 model is only around 3,000 hours (I say only, but, is that good? I don’t know).

In any case, I think I’m going to check out some retailers where I’d be able to see the projector before I drop that much cash. I actually prefer a legitimate TV to a projector, but there’s no way I can travel with one.

I think that when I buy this thing I’ll resell it when the bulb dies.
