Thank you bro, thanks guys. TIE Fighter is the most awesome SW game, reminds me of my youth. I got it working in VDSM pretty fine with sound and that awesome midi tunes. Only problem I have is I cant configure my joystick properly no matter what I do, it doesnt work properly. Any suggestion anyone?

Kron, your instructions don’t seem to make any sense. If I choose to run tie.exe with VDMS, I get the error that I am trying to fix. Are you leaving some steps out?

Not sure. I wrote this before LucasArts put out a fix for it. At this point, I might almost wait and see if they drop TIE Fighter in Steam, although I seriously doubt they’ll keep the awesome midi soundtrack, which is half the purpose of hacking it together this way…

The Game runs on XP with the Comp.-Fix. by Lucasarts. But there is absolutely no sound. Is that a common problem?

Hey, i have tie fighter installed and it works (it seems) though as i try to start game, it wants to install a primitive version of Direct X, and cannot let me go past it, even though i do and try to install it (it wont install)

If you are using the latest version of VDM and are having the problem with the CD not found, don’t worry. Just go back to the tiecd directory and right click on tie.exe and choose run with VDMS. This time, configure it using the ‘custom’ setup options from the first screen. Next screen, choose to create a new configuration from scratch. (you should be in the VDMSound Configuration Wizard) Hit next, then choose the advanced button on the next screen. On the compatibility tab, choose to enable low-level CDROM support MSCDEX. TADA!!!

i’ve used DOSbox to get TIE fighter to work, even got sound, but i can’t remember how to set up a joystick for the game?
also are there any common problems i’m likely to encounter once i find the joystick config?

ive downloaded & installed the vdmsound v2.1.0 (could not find 2.0.4) it did not contain the file “autoexec.vdms” so it can not find my cd drive. any sugestions?

I have tried using VDMS, but it crashes after a short period of time. I can get through about one shorter mission, but anything longer it will crash. I can only get through some missions using the Alt-T command to speed up the mission. I also have an issue where the mouse does not act calibrated and I cannot calibrate it (flies all over the screen, I have some control, but cannot precisely click anything.)
I now use DOSBox, that fixed the crashing issue, but I still have the mouse issue.

Does anyone know anything about how to fix either of these issues?

Hey I got it to work using VDMSOUND with joystick but the game is incredibly slow. I tried using DOSBOX since i see some posts above that declare the game is faster that way but after I mount the drive when I try to run TIE from the promt it loads the installer program (game is already installed). Any susegestions ?

For those who have Problems with findig CD-ROM:

Insert the line

lh %SystemRoot%system32mscdexnt.exe

in the autoexec field (DOS Environment Tab in Advanced Settings) of VDM. Works perfectly for me.

Thanks Zander, but if you download VDMSOUND 2.1.0, it is entirely unnecessary to alter the Autoexe file.
